In most areas it is possible to engage in Cod fishing throughout the year. Cod can reach a weight of 100 lb, but the biggest caught by fishing rod is usually 50 lbs. Cod that weighs 25 lb are not uncommon. The biggest cods, you often get when you are cod fishing from a boat. Cod much prefers the cold water, so in the summer they will move into the deeps, well out to sea. When water temperature reaches its peak in the summer, it is cod fishing from a boat that gives the best catches. At night, however, cod goes into shallower water. Then fishing with lures, jigs, bait or suspension often gives you great catches. You will almost invariably find cod in the vicinity of wrecks, rocky reefs, large logs and similar sites. Even lightly broken ground amongst an otherwise clean seabed will be enough to keep the cod in this area.
When fishing cod from a boat, you should attempt to locate such fishing sites. Use local knowledge, chart and sonar. To locate the fish is often the most difficult task when you are fishing cod, so use the time needed. Fishing for cod is one of the more difficult branches of shore angling to attempt. It's mostly because in recent years cod have been scarce. The species is rarely found really close to the shore, and almost invariably a decent cast is required to reach feeding fish. Casting is an important element of cod fishing from the shore line. A basic standard of casting ability and some local knowledge is essential in order to experience successful cod fishing. Cod Fishing takes place mostly along the bottom. Cast the fishing tackle as long as possible and crank jerkily along the bottom. There is a wide range of lures, jigs, and suspension to choose from. Local conditions determine what fishing tackle you should choose. Using jigs or big lures is a good way to get the cod to bite when fishing from boats. Try using a variety of different colors and shapes to see what the cod likes on that particular day. Lower your jig or lure to the bottom and work it up and down in a fashion known as jigging. Remeber that cod will usually eat anything that is in their way, it isn't nearly as selective as trout or salmon. Bait fishing has also proven to be a good method when fishing cod. Shrimp, lugworms, crabs and mackerel are some of the bait that works great during cod fishing. If you have little experience with cod fishing, you should probably consider joining an angling club. Also, remember that participation in fishing events is an effective way of learning basic shore angling skills. The best is nevertheless to learn from your own experience with cod fishing. This is also the most enjoyable way of learning for many fishermen.
