To outsiders, salmon fishing may seem like a big test of patience. Spending several hours in the river, while waiting days or even weeks before the salmon finally bite, or before you have to realize that it will not happen this time. For many fishermen, however, salmon fishing is therapy. Relaxation in some breathtaking sceneries and thrilling moments when the salmon finally bites, is probably what makes so many people fascinated by this sport fishing.


The water level in a river often determines if the salmon will bite, and where in the river it is located. At high water there is a lot of fresh salmon going up the river. At the same time salmon that is already there, swims further up streams. Such conditions will usually give you the opportunity to experience an excellent salmon fishing. You will often find that the salmon seeks into the calm parts of the river at high water levels.


At low water and at high water temperatures, the salmon will often stay in places where there are relatively strong currents. Under such conditions, fishing for salmon is difficult and requires much patience. At low water and clear weather, you should restrict salmon fishing sunrise and sunset. If possible you should also try salmon fishing at night.


The salmon is an exceptionally strong fish that will provide you with a real struggle once you have gotten it hooked. When the salmon are fighting you and your fishing tackle, you should be aware all the time. Always keep your fishing line tight, so that the hook does not come loose in the salmon's mouth. Also remember to set the crank system on your fishing reel according to conditions and according to what catches you are currently fishing. There are several types of sport fishing to choose from when you are going salmon fishing. The most common are fly fishing, bait fishing as well as fishing with spinners and lures. I'll come back with information on these different fishing methods in a separate article. Remember that no matter which method you choose, you will experience that patience and variation are important when going salmon fishing.


Bait Fishing for salmon has for a long time been a popular method among many fishermen. Worms are the most common bait for salmon fishing in rivers. Please note that in several rivers and lakes it is now illegal to practice bait fishing for salmon.


Bait fishing has often proved itself to be an excellent method to fish for salmon. Mainly we can talk about two ways of bait fishing for salmon. Using bait and sinker as well as using bait and float.


If you release a big worm in the flowing water it will sink slowly and float almost weightless following the current. As a bait fisherman, it is important to imitate this natural situation. Try to lead the bait downstream with such natural movements as possible.
